Emotional Knick-Knack

I have
a sadness,
don't know
where to put it,
what to do
with it.
Can't take it
out for a walk,
feed it
or frame it.
Guess it will stay
on the shelf
for now,
another
emotional knick-knack.

After the Writing Workshop

Guess I'm supposed
to use fancy phrases
that befuddle
and impress
but I don't have
the energy
to tart up words
and trot them
onto the page.
Would rather work
with ordinary,
not my style
to obscure and prettify.
A few choice words,
freshly picked
and simply garnished
are all I need.
No call for organic,
free-range, gluten-free
fussiness.
At my roots
will always be
an Iowa farm girl,
harvesting basics.

PRODUCE

I have been painting vegetables lately, enjoying their colors and forms.

Tomatoes plump and red contrast
with lettuce leaves of crinkly green
beside deep purple globes of beets
and carrot spikes of orange-gold.
Fine art is found at the grocery store.

Loon Haiku

The red-throated loon
gave its' wildly lonesome cry.
I was there, right there.

Seasonal Alaska Diary - Summer Version

Sunrise: 5:11 a.m.
Sunset: 10:41 p.m.
That's a whole lotta light!
And I musn't miss
a minute of it.
How else to explain gardening
at 10 p.m.?
Really must get
to bed sooner
cuz if I wait
until it's really dark
to sleep
that will be August
and I will be crazy
by then.
